YOU’RE ON THE AIR... HOW TO REALLY MAKE IT IN VOICE-OVERS New! In this class we will discuss the industry’s opportunities, the structure of advertising, how to make a demo, the kinds of voices in demand, and most importantly, we demonstrate MY METHOD for finding work, which actually is the ONLY way to get voice-over work. DISCOVER THE FUNGUS AMONG US New! Mushrooms and their allies play an important part in the ecology of the Maine woods. Plus they are fun to observe, photgraph, identify and even eat! This slide show will point out some key identification points, and exhibit pictures of the great variety of fungi you may find within a short walk from your door. Class will cover camera functions, menus and controls, as well as picture taking techniques and the basic skills to get images from the camera to the computer. MAINE DRIVING DYNAMICS This course offers all drivers the opportunity to improve their defensive driving abilities. This five-hour course will include attitudes and the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine’s highways. The course is taught by a certified Maine Driving Dynamics instructor. The course format engages students with lectures, videos, and class discussion/participation. Those completing the course will receive a three-point credit on their driving records. It is important that you arrive at class on time, otherwise you will not receive credit. ASTRONOMY FOR EVERYONE The final frontier… for how much longer? With images of Mars transmitted to us, the mysteries of space continue to unfold before our eyes. If you have ever wondered how the solar system was formed or what the stars and galaxies are really made of, this introductory astronomy course is for you. Learn how to identify the planets and major constellations. Discover the many patterns of motion in the sky and what causes them. Gain a working knowledge of comets, meteors, asteroids, black holes, and supernovae. We will work outside with an 8-inch reflecting telescope for part of each class, weather permitting. On cloudy nights we will do projects like making simple telescopes, using celestial globes, studying photographs, looking at slide shows, and working with astronomy software on computers. Bernie Reim has been teaching astronomy labs at USM since 1992. He also writes monthly columns for newspapers including the Portland Press Herald. He writes and records weekly updates for the USM planetarium. He is very involved in community outreach and education in astronomy.
